George House, Sloane St, London

Replacing two 1960s buildings in Chelsea’s Cadogan estate, George House has two fronts: a more formal elevation at 131 Sloane Street, and a more relaxed face onto Pavilion Road. On Sloane Street, the main, six-storey building – an unashamedly contemporary stone structure in a very sensitive setting – has five levels of offices. Below, ground-floor retail units connect through a sunken, landscaped courtyard to a mews of artisanal shops and restaurants, which transform a former traffic rat-run into a lively, local and intimate street.
